Friday Folder Information
Ridgeway learners are bringing home their Friday Folder today. This folder will be one method that teachers use to communicate about student behaviors, effort, conduct, and learning in the classroom. Please watch for the folder approximately every two weeks, or four to five times each trimester.
Student behaviors, effort, and conduct will be evaluated in three main areas: work habits, interaction with peers, and interactions with adults. The broad category of these skills is called ‘Success Ready’. Progress is monitored with a 4-point scale in which 3 is the eventual goal. 4s are rarely used, as they show mastery beyond the standard. At this point in the school year, a score of 1 or 2 is fairly normal. Please look for the comments to give additional information.
If your child has a score of 2, celebrate that! If they receive a score of 3, celebrate that! Please remember that students are learning skills. If they have a score of 1, they just are not to the level of 2 YET. Each score represents the first few weeks of school. There is plenty of time for learning and growth. Teachers think like this: here’s where the student is now, here is where we are headed, and this is what we can do. The goal is progress and growth!
Principal's Pen
We use a curricular program called Second Step that is designed to teach skills for social and academic success. Each weekly lesson focuses on directly teaching students the skills that strengthen their ability to:
- Learn
- Have empathy
- Manage emotions
- Solve problems
This year, we want to ensure that all school staff learn the language and skills to support our students. The whole school will teach the age-appropriate lesson by unit at one time every Friday. All school staff will be partnered with a classroom for this 30 minute lesson.
Today’s lesson focused on the skills of listening and respect. Key parts of this lesson are:
- Listening in a group helps everyone learn.
- Thinking about how others want to be treated and treating them that way helps you be respectful.
- Having respect and empathy helps you get along with others.
Watch for the weekly Second Step lesson focus in the RAP every Friday!

Unit Notes
Unit A
If you have not already, please send in a printed family photo that is 5x7 or smaller. Additionally, if you have not sent your child in with headphones (no earbuds please!), please do so. This week we began switching our Fundations and Math class, ask your child about something they did during this time!
Unit B
We have been establishing reading routines in our classrooms. We would love for students to practice their reading at home for at least 20 minutes every day. Also, please continue to check the Home-School Folder daily and help your child get in the habit of bringing it back to school when they come. We are looking forward to another great week!
